About Kahn's Practical Self-Defense

While the nature and subject matter of Self-Defense and the focus of our classes is very serious, we pride ourselves on creating a very upbeat, safe and enjoyable learning environment. We push our students to excel, to achieve the results they came to us for, and far more.

We make our training very personal, which is why we keep our classes under 10 students and why we are often asked to teach private and semi-private lessons. In this way we can design and pace the instruction to the full range of our student’s abilities and experiences, faster for some and slower for others.

Our clientele is quite diversified, between those who have no prior martial arts experience and may not be in the best of shape, to those with a great deal of prior martial arts experience and are in great shape. Where you start from is not important, it's where we help you to go that is all-important. Some of our students prefer to be in classes that are all female or all male and some enjoy the mix. Once again because of our class size and teaching style we have the flexibility to accommodate those requests.

Some classes are taught as accelerated short term programs while others are long term and ongoing. We are not new to teaching practical self-defense. Many of our classes (advanced courses) are very long running. Our longest running class to date is taught for the Town of Greenwich, CT, and has been ongoing since 1982. Our success comes out of our desire to give our students the very best instruction available, continually updating and refining the curriculum and with constant instructor training.

Students must be at least 16 years of age (with a few exceptions for private lessons). As stated before, we take Self-Defense as it must be taken, very seriously. What we teach and the way we teach it is simply not appropriate for children.

Chief Instructor

Jeff Kahn is the Chief instructor and owner of Kahn’s Practical Self-Defense, LLC

He has over 35 years of training and teaching experience in several martial art disciplines, Kenpo, Arnis, Kali, Kung Fu and Israeli Self Defense.

Jeff is currently a 5th degree Black Belt having had the rare honor of receiving his first two Kenpo Black Belts directly from Mr. Ed Parker, Father of American Kenpo (empty hands). He has also received teaching certificates from Mr. Frank Ortega, First generation Kali (weapons) instructor under Leo Gaje.

We have been running a Martial arts school in Greenwich CT since 1982. Teaching full classes, small groups and private lessons. Jeff has been, and continues to teach self–defense classes and seminars for colleges, corporations, Government agencies, women's groups, cities and towns. Since moving to Wilton, CT about twenty years ago, and finding a great need for Self-Defense instruction in this area, Jeff has also been teaching these skills in the Fairfield and Westchester regions.

Jeff has always had great respect for the Traditional Martial arts. The beauty and grace of their movements, the strength and athleticism, their ties to and honor of the past. But the past is the past and we must live in the present. This is the reason Jeff teaches the way he does.

To Jeff the ART of the martial arts is in the functionality. The beauty is in making a movement more efficient, useful and most importantly making it PRACTICAL. This is why he chose to put the word “PRACTICAL” in our name.

Jeff's approach to teaching Martial arts and Self-Defense is always reality based. Based on logic and science, he will never tell you to do something "because that's the way we have always done it" or "because I said so". He will not ask you to do anything unless he can not only teach you and show you how to do it, but tell you why it is the best way.
